Vladimir Hristov

Vladimir Hristov (Skopje) makes paintings, drawings, media art and mixed media artworks. By using popular themes such as sexuality, family structure and violence, Hristov finds that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humor that echoes our own vulnerabilities. The artist also considers movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking man who experiences a continuous loss. His paintings don’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By emphasizing aesthetics, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.

ARTIST STATEMENT: ‘My paintings are rough and ready. They may be beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and yet simultaneously ugly and chaotic often with provocative and distorted forms. It is this tension which forms my research in painting the imagery. Sometimes the works can be almost passive and subtle in their presence and use of color. Other times expressively explosive. My works are built up with; charcoal, markers, acrylic paint, oil, etc. on canvas, possibly with (in developing phase) interactively triggered by audience video projections onto my artworks.
With an abstract attitude to form and volume finely rendered “human-like” appearances appear in rough, semi-defined and complex spaces. The intention is to take the atmosphere of the image and allow the image “to become inside the room” instead of the idea of having a “window on the wall” to dip into. Those forms should as well be calling to us to join theirs or they are coming into our world anyway…’ .
