Mari Mészáros

The amazing slump-cast glass sculptures of Mari Mészáros is unique to anyone working worldwide. Ms Mészáros work retains a strong classical origin, but still seems new, projecting a poetic sense of reality. Segmented and shifting surfaces make the human forms in Ms Mészáros pieces appear almost ancient and modern, both in gesture and emotion. The work begins with live models and plaster casts. Ms Mészáros carves and cuts into the mold before heating the glass to a high temperature where gravity slumps the glass into the mold. The results are inspired, figurative sculpture that seems to be a spiritual interpretation as it reflects and transmits light at the same time. Ms Mészáros is an artist whose work transcends any glass tradition and will surely inspire others to study and emulate her, beginning a new tradition. Thomas J. Boone
